Should We Care About Water Conservation?

Water conservation is something that has been the topic of conversation for a number of years. This is a way of reducing the amount of wasted water and managing how it is used. This can be implemented in the home with simple changes like turning the tap off whilst you brush your teeth or showering instead of filling the bath all the way up. There are simple things that can be done to help reduce the amount of wasted water – after all, water is an essential part of keeping us, plants and animals alive. Let alone saving you money as wasted water is still chargeable from your water company! At Acorn Thorn, we supply a range of products to help reduce the amount of wasted water, ranging from flush controllers to dual flush cisterns to push button taps.

Many people may believe that waterless urinals are a good water saving alternative, as the name suggests it requires no water, however we do not recommend these as they tend to omit a bad odour if not properly maintained. This is caused by the fact there is no water to flush the pipework through and allows a build-up of UMC acid and bacteria in the pipes causing potential blockages and smells. Flush controllers are products that are connected to a cistern of a urinal to control the frequency of the flushing. Traditionally, a urinal cistern flushes each time the cistern is filled. This means it can flush more than three times an hour, so even when unused, the urinal will still flush. This is a concern especially for schools and workplaces that shut down for a weekend or for long periods of time, for example school holidays and close down periods.

Marnic Water Watch Flush Controller

Our Marnic water watch flush controller is the perfect product to conserve this kind of wasted water. It is installed on the water feed before it reaches the cistern to control how often the cistern flushes. They work by an infrared sensor which triggers the cistern to fill when the washroom is used. This means if no one enters the bathroom for a few hours or days the cistern will not flush. This can be adapted to flush once daily in periods of close down or school holidays to keep the pipes fresh. We supply both mains and battery operated flush controllers.

Dual flushing cisterns are another good way of reducing wasted water. These work with a dual button providing a full flush which uses the full amount of water, or a half flush which uses a lower proportion of water. Most of the cisterns we supply have this function. This is a brilliant way to conserve water and ensure your workplace or school helps reduce wasted water.

Another way you can reduce wasted water is by installing and using push button timed flow taps. These taps allow water to flow for a short period of time – enough time to wash your hands but not long enough to be a waste of water. Our push button taps have been re-designed with a vandal resistant feature. Once pushed down, the water will only flow once the push button has been released. This prevents jamming, stopping deliberate flooding.

Other environmental impacts to note if you are planning a commercial washroom are the use of energy conservation. In commercial washrooms, automatic lights are a good way to reduce the amount of wasted energy. These work with a sensor which senses when a person walks into the room. This can be installed in hallways and offices to conserve energy, especially at quiet or close down periods.
